The Red Lion was situated on the Market
Place. This grade-II listed pub was present by 1784 when the publican was Francis Friss. It
the 1990s it became an Irish pub called Finn M'Cauls, later shortened to
Finns. It closed in March 2012 and is now used as a restaurant. |

Public House, the rest being No 25
(qv). C18 & C19 alterations and link over carriageway. Rendered brick, old
plain tile roof. 2 storey, 2 bay, double pile, and C19 bay over carriageway
to LH, and to RH No 23, the rest of the hostelry. Between original bays
top-glazed 4-Panel door in doorcase of panelled pilasters, with roundel
capitals and cut brackets supporting open pediment. Each side C19 wide
6-pane sash with slightly tented hood from sills of upper sashes which have
small upper sashes. Timber eaves frieze. To LH bay over entrance has angular
bay with 4-Pane sashes and flat roof. Higher ridge to this bay with stack
between this
bay and rest. |
