Hunters Lodge

The Hunters Lodge was situated on Southampton Road. This pub closed in 2009 and has now been demolished.

I was born in Birmingham to Olive and Harold Greenslade. Olive's Mother, two sisters and brother lived in Sheldon, Birmingham and in the early sixties left their respective employments in Birmingham having purchased the Hunters Lodge Hotel, Southampton Road, Ringwood. They had no experience whatsoever in the hotel trade.
The persons involved in purchasing and running the hotel were:- Ernest Harwood - (Prudential Insurance Agent - Bachelor.), Laura Harwood (Spinster.), Evelyn Preston (nee Harwood - Widow.) and
Mary Jane Harwood (Retired Mother of all.)
They moved into the Hunter's Lodge and started a programme of renovation, Ernest was the DIY and garden. They produced all their own fresh vegetables for the hotel.
Evelyn Preston was the painter, Cleaner, decorator and fixer.
Laura Harwood was the cook and in charge of the dining room.
The Hunters Lodge under the patronage of the family made huge strides and was very busy - it made a good profit and was a picture to the eye in Southampton Road being well docketed with an immaculate garden. The family moved from Ringwood to Torquay after some five/six years operating the hotel.
