In the 15th century there was a wharf
here called Pynke Haven, where they landed the stone from Normandy used to
build the palace at Bishops Waltham. This Pub was really only accessible by
water and frequented by the lightermen transiting between Botley and
Bursledon with their cargo's of wood, bricks, coal, flour from the mill and
hoops from Botley Quay. The unique 'double tide' that we have would have
contributed to the takings of the pub however, it was not uncommon for the
lighters to be unloaded, loaded and away on the same tide. |
