The New Inn was situated on Snails
Lane. This pub was converted to a residential home following closure. Owned
by the Macnamara family, it is where Caitlin Macnamara lived, who married
Dylan Thomas. Dylan and Caitlin lived there for over six months from 1937 to
1938 before moving to Wales. But made regular visits afterwards.
The Macnamara family were extremely connected to Augustus John and his
family. Also, Nicolette Devas (Later Shephard) nee Macnamara also grew up
here. Nicolette was married to the artist Anthony Devas then later the
artist Rupert Shephard. Nicolette was both an artist and novelist in her own
right. She is best known for her autobiography Two Flamboyant Fathers, which
is about Augustus John and her natural father Francis Macnamara.
In Caitlin’s autobiographies and Nicolette’s, they tell many stories of
living here. Unfortunately, the house was torn down to make way for the
gravel pits in the 1960’s. |
