The Malt & Hops was situated on Broad Street. |

The Malt and Hops was a favourite during my first year as a
student in Bristol (1978) , you accessed the pub down some stairs and the
whole place was in a vaulted cellar. The stair rails were wrought iron, and
it seemed fun when leaving to bypass the stairs and climb the ironwork, but
maybe that was just me. The beers were good, Directors, Huntsman. I never
tried the food. |

I was a full-time barman there during my university vacation
in 1980, and after uni from August to November 1981. The managers were a
wonderful and generous couple called Terry and Sylvia. There were about 8
members of staff, but the only names I recall were Paul Carter and John
Evans. |

I remember visiting this pub in 1977 or 78 ...
my first year at Bristol Polytechnic (now UWE). It was always packed and a
favourite of the student fraternity at that time, and as I was an early
convert to the real ale cause I had to check it out. My first pint of
Theakstons Old Peculier was drunk here, at the then eye wateringly expensive
price of 50p a pint - this was at a time when the average beer price per
pint was around 35p. I was enjoying a bottle of that same brew today and it
reminded me of this place ... really sorry to see that it's long gone. |
