Cat & Wheel

The Cat & Wheel was situated on Castle Green. This pub was present by 1752 when the publican was William Davridge. It closed in 1906.

Charles Cowper  "Licensed Victualler" of the Cat & Wheel, Castle Green (1850-1852) was my great, great grandfather.  It was from the Cat & Wheel that he migrated with his wife and young family to Melbourne, Australia arriving early 1853.  By 1856 he held a miner's right on the Victorian goldfields.  He was also the publican of the Old England Rennison's Bath from at least 1841-1844.  He died as a "gentleman of independent means" in Melbourne on 26 December, 1875 aged 68 years and is buried at the old Melbourne General Cemetery.
