The Armada
|
|
|
|
Near the corner with Old
King Street, now the corner of the Hub diagonally opposite Dixons. The
Armada, previously known as the Ship until 1891, was pulled down during the 1950’s re-development
of the area. The premises next door were occupied by Henry Jones the flour
millers who were the inventors of self raising flour. This pub closed
in 1953. |

The publican in
the 1930s and 1940s was my great Aunt, Lilian Southcott Jones and her
husband Ex Household Cavalry Capt Oliver.A regular customer was Hollywood
film star Cary Grant, when he returned to his home town to visit his mother.
On one such visit Cary took off his Hollywood labelled tie and presented it
to Lilian as a keepsake. |
