The
Trowel & Hammer was situated on the A12. This pub
closed in the 1990`s after being renamed The Spaniard. I have fond memory's
of my Mother and Father always stopping there for a drink, with their motor
bike and sidecar in the 1950`s whenever they used the A12. There is now an
Esso filling station on the site. |

I travelled to Ipswich yesterday from Essex a
journey I do frequently and as I pass through Marks Tey it brings back
childhood memories of dropping off with my parents for a drink at this
iconic location. It always marked the halfway mark in our journey to my
aunts. I last had a drink there with my Dad in the late 1970's on my way
home from an Ipswich Town West Brom football match and we did it more out if
nostalgia than anything else. There were never 'crowds' of customers in the
pub but it was a significant landmark and a welcoming environment. How sad
that a beautiful building has been demolished for a petrol station.
