The Cock and Pye was situated at 56 North Hill.
This pub was present by 1705
and closed in 1939 – the
premises are now used as solicitors’offices.. |

I think that the Cock and Pye ended up being common rooms for the Gilberd
School on North Hill in the 1960’s and onwards, maybe earlier. The Gilberd
is now at High Woods and the old school is now the sixth form college.
Maybe someone there could give you more information. |

Yes, indeed, the Cock
and Pye was used as common rooms for the Gilberd School.
I attended the Gilberd School between 1958 and 1963 and my class common
room/home room was upstairs at the back of the Cock and Pye for my last two
years. I believe there was another classroom at the front and one downstairs
but they were almost never used. |
