The Retreat

The Retreat was situated on Retreat Way. This pub has now been demolished with housing built on the site.

My late father Dennis aka Nick Nicholson and stepmother were landlords about 1970. The pub was known to be a regular for West Ham footballers.

Bev Gannon 1970s Customer.  Was an In pub to go to back in the day. . Lots people wanted be there. packed out all the time. A lot of fellas had flash cars.... when the pub called time every body would go to the Epping country club not far away.. I went Friday and Saturday.
Amanda Watson 1970s/1980s Occasionally customer but daughter of a regular customer. My father, Mike Howard, weekly visited this pub with his friends. He was known as 'The Fire Chief' as once in the 70s he straightened his curly hair and it looked like a fireman's helmet. It was his hunting ground after his divorce from my mum until he married again. Sadly he died 2013 but often talked of the great evenings with friends at this great pub.
Dave Eason 1970s/1980s As Bev Cannon states lots of flash cars here. I was in here Sunday lunchtimes & nights, we always found a party to tag onto afterwards. I discovered Stella Artois in this place. On Summer nights sat outside we would watch the posers come around the bend and head for the pub at speed giving it some grunt, some stalled and a huge cheer would go up. Never see any trouble in here at all. Get me a time machine pronto, I'd love to go back.
Linda Brooks 1969 My best friend and I were regulars we had hooks under the bar at our bar stools for our handbags which we always called ours. Had so much fun there it was a brilliant venue for young people to meet.
June Hughes (nee Witchell) 1963/1968 When I frequented this pub, the Publicans were the Drivers. The West Ham boys was usually here(not everyone), the Gang was Arthur Easter, Johnny Woods, John Chapel, Kipper, Terry Hughes Freddy Phipps and Mannie.
