Queens Head

The Queens Head was situated on Coptfold Street. This pub has now been demolished. I used to use the Queens Head back in the late 1970s. There was a large room with a bar and a separate smaller room. The bar used to have one handpump serving Ind Coope Bitter and very occasionally there was a small wooden cask of Ind Coope Burton Ale set up on the table in the smaller room.
One particular evening in the late 1970s, myself and a couple of friends called into this pub as usual to find that the landlord had no real ale on. We were faced with a choice of keg Long Life or keg Double Diamond.
The landlord leant over the bar and said with a wry grin, “it sorts the men out from the boys”. We chose the Long Life, which apparently made us men in the eyes of the landlord!
