The Volunteer

Picture source: National Brewery Heritage Trust

The Volunteer was situated at the junction of River Road and Alfreds Way (A13).
This pub was a roadhouse on the A13 built in 1934. It took its name from a previous beerhouse in Fisher Street (now Abbey Road). It was closed in 1999 and demolished in 2001 to facilitate the widening of the A13.

I was born nearby the Volunteer. My Dad was a regular and I used the pub a little as well. My Dad used to play a squeeze box there and also played piano like Les Dawson. He was a real character. His nickname was Jacko. He had so many friends in there. When he was in his seventies the younger guys all looked after him. He was great at pool and spent as much time as he could afford to playing pool or his mouth organ in there. The younger gang were so generous to him always (Graham Rudge and Steve ) they also would always make sure he had a big birthday celebration every year. So heart warming.
