The Short Blue was situated at 207 Bastable
Avenue. This pub closed in 2009.
The pub's name came fro the Short Blue Fishing fleet which was based in
Barking until it relocated on the East Coast in mid Victorian times |

Built in the 1950s as part of Thames View
Estate, a council housing estate. It has now been partially demolished and
will become a supermarket. |

In August 2011 Barking and Dagenham Council gave planning permission for the
remains of the Short Blue to be demolished (see photo below of site) and a 3/4 floor block of about 15
flats to be built on the site. |

I was the Licensee of the SB from
1972-1978 and the youngest one for a short while in England. A pleasant pub
to run without many problems. Customers were mainly working class. Lunchtime
some customers from the Thamesview trading estate. It was part of the
St.Georges Taverns estate ( which became changed to Grand Metropolitan Ltd
). I had the first video machine (Tennis), first to try Fosters Lager,
Ruddles bitter, and Baileys Irish Cream. Won best kept Cellar. I left and
went to The Bull in Dagenham where I stayed until 1983. |

Tom Livingstone I think it Tom ..landlord at the time. I
worked part time as my full time job at Spurlings the transport company
in Silvertown did not pay me enough. I was a Scot who came South to see
the pavements paved with gold.
Regulars were mostly from Fords Dagenham or dockers/ex Dockers. Good lot
..lot of banter about my name and accent ..Obviously called
Jock...learned the old rhyming slang from them. Good memories....sorry
it's gone. |
