The Hope was situated at
170 Gascoigne Road. This pub closed on 4th September 2011 having been built
in 1903. Local press reports suggest that it will become a community centre. |

I used to live in Gascoigne Road at the top end,
near St. Paul's Road. When I was about 5 (1954) I was riding my trike in the
street seeing a friend other side of the road so I dashed across the road
without looking, pulling my trike with me. Unfortunately I did not see the
car coming and was knocked down. No bones broken but seriously winded the
publican of The Hope and his wife picked me up and took me in the pub while
someone got my mum. |
