The Turf Hotel was situated at 4 John Street. This pub has now been demolished to make way for a car park. At the time we lived there it was an Ind coop & Allsops house, it was also wartime so there was no outside lighting. All the windows were blacked out the front door had a black twisted entrance so light didn't shine out when the door opened. There was not a lot of beer available, some days had short hours, no hard liquor at all except my dad was good at finding whisky mostly on the fiddle and mostly Irish.
