Vane Arms

The Vane Arms was situated on Darlington Road. This pub closed in August 2019, and was sold to a developer whose application to turn the property into housing was refused by planners. The community hoped to buy the pub, to turn it into a Community Asset. Money was raised to buy the building, but the offer was rejected by the developer, and on appeal the developer has approval to turn the property into housing.

My ancestor, a well-known theatre actress and singer Mena Brae (full name Wilhelmina Augusta Downes) and her husband William Downes lived at the Vane Arms Hotel, when Mena died in 1917. At the time of her death her husband was publican here.
