The publican in 1911 was William Adams.
William was an Army Pensioner having served 32 years, a long time for a
Victorian Soldier, he retired from the Army in 1904.. He joined the Army in
December 1872 aged 18, Born 1854 in Islington London he served in the 2nd
Battalion 4th Lancaster Regiment, seeing service as a Colour Sergeant in
South Africa during the 1879 Zulu War [ yes that film ‘Zulu’ but he was not
at this battle ] After the war his regiment was posted to India finally
returning to the UK in May 1883, and his wife who he had married in 1878
just days before he left for Africa. He was awarded the South African Medal
with Clasp 1879, and later he received the Good Conduct Medal in 1891. I
think he died in Stockton Durham in 1922 and was probably buried in Oxbridge
Lane Cemetery Stockton on Tees, Durham on 14 October 1922. |
