The New Inn was situated on
Blaydon Burn. The pub was the meeting place for shooting matches. In November
1860, John Batey was at the pub to arrange a clay pigeon shoot. On his way
home he called at the Crown and Cannon where he continued drinking with
Thomas Smith and others.Showing a half sovereign proved fatal as he was
murdered on his way home by Smith. Smith was found a week later still
wearing Batey's trousers and boots. He was tried and executed on December
27th of the same year. |
