The Belmont Tavern was
situated in the equally short-lived colliery village of Belmont Colliery, Co
Durham. Belmont Colliery was sunk in 1829, opened in 1836 and closed in
1872. During that period it was surrounded by a village which included the
Belmont Tavern. Following closure of the colliery the village lived on for a
number of years but was eventually demolished. It disappears from maps
around the end of the 19th Century. Following the demise of the original
Belmont Colliery village a new village of Belmont was built 1.5 miles to the
south-east. Today it is a suburb of the city of Durham. |
