From The Good Pub Guide 1983: |
Just below the Castle ruins, this is
one of the most picturesquely placed pubs in Britain. Its stone walls,
small-windowed and as strong as a fortress, plunge down to the River Tees,
far below, which swirls through a rocky gully here, and under the old bridge
which is virtually part of the pub. Inside, the ancient tavern lives up to
its promise: shiny black panelling embellished with carvings and old plates
on carved shelves, low beams, a motley gaggle of chairs around the
cast-iron-framed tables, and a cheerful local atmosphere. McEwan's 80/- and
Younger's IPA on handpump; juke box (or piped pop music), darts and a fruit
machine; bar food is restricted to sandwiches, pies and so forth. |
