The Mermaid Hotel was situated on the corner of the High Street and Northgate. Established around the 1850s and known as The Mermaid Inn, the Riot Act was read outside this pub in a disturbance about the price of bread. Sometime later the name was changed from The Mermaid Hotel to The Northgate Hotel. It is now used for retail.
