The George Hotel was situated on George Street.
This pub was present by 1853. |
|
The following is taken from a 1930s Wills
cigarette card: |
'The George at Axminster is a pleasing specimen
of the type of inn built in the first half of the eighteenth century. Its
harmonious Georgian proportions bring vividly to mind the days when coaches
and post-chaises swung proudly along the London-Exeter road, their ever
increasing numbers at that time causing a corresponding increase in hostels
anxious to supply the needs of passengers. One of the chief architectural
attractions of The George is an Adam dining room, with the original Adam
fireplace and an old music gallery.' |
