The Pheasant Inn was situated at 112 Bridge Street.

On the old Bridgett Mills Buildings at the top of the east side of Bridge Street, there is a sign. Indicating the presence, c 1790, of the Pheasant Inn. The building itself was built in the early 19th century and early trade directories name the public House on this site as The Ring of Bells. In 1828 the publican’s name was Samuel Gaskell, but in 1835 the name of the Inn had changed - if not the publican – to The Pheasant and the 1841 Census gives Gaskell as the publican. In 1851, Richard Woodroffe was in charge, while in 1861, 1871 and 1881, the innkeeper was William Hobson, with 1891 giving the name of Jane Hobson. Eliza Halliday was the publican in 1901, while 1911 omits the name, just giving Robert Brown the publican. Kelly’s Trade Directory of 1941 has the Pheasant at No. 112.

The licensee during the 1950’s was James Finnan, an Irishman, small in stature. James met with an accident close to this Pub and sadly died late 1950.  His wife Margaret took over the licence and operated the Pub until it was closed by Offilers Brewery a short time later early 1960’s. James and Margaret had two daughters. I married their daughter Patricia in 1962.
