The Globe

The Globe was situated on Sacheveral Street. This was a smallish Kimberley tied house that was demolished in 1980 to make way for the inner ring road. This was eventually started in 2009.

It was two terraced houses knocked into one and was located opposite the old Derby Playhouse. They had music (a pianist) at the pub most nights in the 1970s and also at weekend lunchtimes. A woman called Connie used to play the piano. She also played at one or two other places in Derby, including The Alex.
She must have been in her late 70s then and I recall she had bright ginger hair and wore brightly-coloured clothes. She was a very gifted pianist, accompanying singers by harmonising in thirds.
What made The Globe special for me was that the actors from the Playhouse used to call in for a drink after a show.
After moving the tables back to create some space, the regulars would be treated to impromptu demonstrations of singing and ballet dancing from the professionals.
There was no carpet on the floor but the brasses were polished until they shone. A coal fire always seemed to be burning and the beer was exceptional – Kimberley Ales.
It was a working man's pub. No swearing was allowed.
In those days, the local singers used to walk to the various local pubs around Derby and sing the same couple of songs in each pub.
If you asked a singer to sing a particular number he would often say something along the lines of, "Sorry that's Dennis's song. He'll be in at 9pm".
In fact, Dennis was one such singer.
He used to sell papers at Derby station and bring copies in for the regulars to look at.

My Uncle and Aunt, Louis and Elizabeth Granger, were the landlord land lady of the Globe. Fond early life visits to Derby to see them early 1960s. I remember the outside cobbled yard toilets. Went back in the 80s to revisit & still the very basic working Pub. Remember the cobbled street & terraced houses.
