I believe my father, James Edmund Bates, was the
licensee around 1947 to 1949/50.
My sister was born on the premises in July 1947 and I think I can recall, as
a 4 or 5 year old, having a bedroom behind an interior window which enabled
me to peer through a glass shelved liquor cabinet into the public bar.
In 1952 after a short stay in Wortley, South Yorkshire, my family emigrated
to Australia with three of their five children.
I returned to Creswell in 1975 and visited the hotel. Whilst chatting to the
publican on that occasion I was amazed to hear that some of his local
patrons still talked about the times when Jim and Vera Bates were their
hosts back in the late 40's. I returned once again to the UK in 2012 and was
disappointed to find that the hotel had closed. |
