The Kings Head was situated on Knifesmithgate.
The publican in 1899 was Joseph Green. This pub is now used as a cafe bar. |
|
Joseph Green, the publican in 1899, was my great Grandfather. By 1901 he'd moved
to The Crown on Lordsmill Street, which is now under a big roundabout. The
old Kings Head was demolished in the early 1920s along with the Mallet &
Tool for a road widening scheme. The new building on that side of the road
incorporated a new pub that carried the same name (see above photo). I think it is now a
trendy wine bar.
One of Joseph's sons, Billy Green became the
Landlord of the Phoenix on St Marys Gate in 1923 until he died in harness
in 1975. This pub is now a JD Wetherspoon outlet called Spa Lane Vaults.
There is more on Billy and the Phoenix on the Chesterfield CAMRA website.
