This pub was owned in the early 20th century by
my grandparents Gilbert and Elizabeth (nee Barrow) Kirkpatrick. I remember
them talking about running a soup kitchen for coal miners during a strike.
My grandfather, a former miner himself, also owned a fishing boat, converted
from a yacht he bought in the Isle of Man, named The Shamrock. They later
bought a house on The Loop Road before eventually leaving Whitehaven for
Fleetwood, Lancashire, and then Sale, Cheshire. |
