Lion & Railway

Lion & Railway, Northwich

The Lion & Railway was situated on Station Road. This pub has now been converted into flats.

I started work at the Telephone Exchange in 1980 which was a short 5 minutes strop from the pub. Engineers and Telephone Operators went there most Friday's but a big event was Christmas Eve. So much so that as an engineer we organised a shift system, providing cover at the exchange in 30 minute blocks. If there was an incident, we had the number of the pub to call and summon up resources. I don't recall ever having to use it, but we were prepared.
Ann & Peter were the landlords I remember, always welcoming and pleasant. Ann had her Farther Christmas outfit she wore at the time too.
I had my stag night there in 1988, by then I was working in Manchester, still with BT so a group of colleagues caught the train out to Northwich. I think it was a first for most of them. I have a photo of Ian Eckersley balancing a pint glass on his elbow and then trying to catch it in his hand on the same arm in one swift action. He did it as the photo shows but spilled some of his bitter!
The last BT associated do I recall was one that I organised in late 2006 with Carmel O'Keeffe (she was an operator in the early 80's and is now my wife since 2013)' around 40 ex-BT people turned up, it was a good night!
