The Evening Star was situated at 87-89 James Street.

This pub was my introduction to Macclesfield.
I was starting my new job at Software Sciences at London and Manchester House following a holiday in Greece. I had left it that they would arrange accommodation but got back from holiday to find a welcome letter with a note saying if you want us to arrange accommodation for the first week we can. So up I went to Macclesfield from London in my old car. I eventually arrived late on the Sunday night and started a trawl for accommodation. Eventually someone pointed me in the direction of The Evening Star and I ended up staying as a guest for 9 weeks before moving into a house-share and then on to my own place in Bollington.
The pub was run by Norma and Dennis at that time. It was an eye opener in terms of the hours a publican works and how even then they were reliant on ‘lock-ins’ to keep their head above water. I can remember there was a darts team and a customer called Mike who was an osteopathist, and that I felt like I was on the set of Coronation Street in the Rovers Return. I was exceptionally well looked after and enjoyed my stay. Norma and Dennis were my guides to what went on for example the shutdown at Wakes Week. The only off putting incident was overhearing Norma shout at Dennis about his cleaning standards and instructing him not to pee in the sink.
