The Norfolk Arms was situated at 10
Market Place. The blue plaque in the above photo reads: 'This plaque is
located on the former site of The Norfolk Arms, where an apalling disaster
took place on 1st April 1829 during the depression in the cotton trade. The
catastrophe occurred when almost 700 operatives met to discuss a threat by
employers to reduce their wages. 29 men and women were killed, with many
more injured, when the floor of the room collapsed, leaving the unfortunate
victims to crash into the cellar'. The pub closed in 1960 and has now been
demolished. |
