The Railway Tavern was situated on
Station Approach. This inn/hotel was popular with both railway workers and
and station users. It was, unusually, made from wood and this construction
choice sadly led to its closure and subsequent demolition |

One of the buildings on the station
site that captured the imagination was the old hotel originally called "The
Railway Tavern". This was a white wooden building and stood next to the
track that came in from Aylesbury and opposite the Station Master's house.
It was quite ironic that when the hotel finally shut down back in the 1960s,
one of the reasons given was that the authorities were worried that sparks
from the new diesel trains that were gradually replacing the steam engines
would be a fire risk to the building. The fact that for many years the 'fire
and brimstone' steam locomotives had gone in and out of the station without
a problem didn't seem to matter. At one point in the 1870s, the landlord of
the Railway Tavern was also the landlord of the George & Dragon in Princes
Risborough High Street. |
