One Pin

The One Pin was situated on One Pin Lane. This pub closed in 2009 and was demolished c2010 and replaced by new houses. The One Pin was used in the 1953 British comedy ‘Genevieve’, about the London to Brighton Rally, starring Kenneth More, John Gregson, Kay Kendall and Dinah Sheridan. The drivers stop at a pub on the way to Brighton – which would be a bit of tortuous route from London if via Bucks, but as the film was shot at Pinewood, it was just round the corner.

I was doing a Google drive-by and was saddened to see the One Pin gone. I didn’t realise it was ten years ago but, nevertheless, not so surprising. I was a regular there in the sixties and early seventies when the unmatchable Dougie Spencer was the owner and landlord. His repertoire of risqué jokes was unending. It was very much a vertical drinking establishment back then. Definitely elbows-in on a Sunday lunchtime. After his wife Pam died he did carry on for quite while I believe. I last met Dougie in 1981, still healthy. We moved far away from there long ago.
We returned to visit the area quite some time ago and obviously Dougie had passed on and the place was now a Thai restaurant but not refitted and still largely the same interiors.
We stayed to eat and and were the only people in the place. What a disaster. Food wasn’t that good either. No surprise that it eventually closed. We were glad that Doug and Pam Spencer were not alive to see it.
