The Thames Tavern was situated on Kennet Side. This pub was demolished in 1975 as part of a
redevelopment of the Newtown area. |
|
It is one of 3 pubs listed for Reading in the
CAMRA 1975 Good Beer Guide. The others are Cross Keys and Rising Sun.) CAMRA
describes the Thames Tavern as being "on the towpath by the grotty part of
the River Kennet". It sold Ind Coope bitter and mild from the Romford
brewery. In truth, not a great beer, but the only non-keg Ind Coope to be
found in Reading and a contrast with other superior real ales. It also had a
bar billiards table. In 1975, we thought the best real ale to be had in the
Reading area was Gales, which we used to drink at the Pack Horse in
Mapledurham. |
