The Rising Sun was situated at 18 Forbury Road. This
Brakspears pub closed in 2014. |

What a great pub the Rising was circa 1975! It
is one of the 3 pubs listed in the 1975 Good Beer Guide. (The others are
Cross Keys and Thames Tavern.) The GBG says of it: "A wide choice of bars,
suiting all types. Noisy and busy at most times but very friendly." It
served Brakspear bitter, ordinary and special, and mild - all dispensed by
handpump. I used to go there a lot. The beer was always in good condition.
Another attraction was the several small bars, which made for an intimate
atmosphere. I much prefer a small bar to the great open-space bars of pubs
nowadays. Another attraction was the jukebox. I vividly remember listening
to 'I'm Mandy Fly Me' in 1976. Brakspear was a fine tipple. I rated it the
3rd best beer in the Reading area - after Gales and Courage. |
