The Shoulder Of Mutton was situated at 56 High Street. This pub is now in mixed commercial use.

I came across the name  when reading a book "A Burglar's Life or The stirring Adventures of the Great English Burglar, Mark Jeffrey"  which was first published in 1893. "When we arrived at Biggleswade I was asked if I knew the Shoulder and Mutton Hotel, but they could get nothing from me." It is the first person account of a burglar Mark Jeffrey and his brother Luke Jeffrey who were eventually caught and sent on a convict ship to Australia. His brother was also sent to Australia but not at the same time. Mark Jeffrey spent all his life in prison until his death in 1893. They were both born in Wood Ditton, Cambridgeshire.
