Crown & Sceptre

The Crown & Sceptre was situated on Bedford Street. This pub was present by 1827 when the publican was Daniel Wiltshire. It was demolished in the early 1970s to make way for a supermarket.
Its 1827 valuation shows it as a freehold public house, having a washhouse and room over stabling for four horses and loft, woodbarn with loft and a lean-to piggery; garden, yard and 2a. 2r. 13p. of pasture land, and situated 1/2 mile from the house, stabling for four horses with loft, poultry house and two horse stable. The granary adjoining belonging exclusively to John Morris is not valued. In the yard is a cottage divided into two tenements with gardens to each and a woodbarn and loft over in the respective occupations of Clark and Hardwick.
